Paper?

Today I got to view an installation at the LaVerne Krause gallery. The work is a paper instalation by students of the University of Oregon. Being able to walk through the art and experience it firsthand was a very powerful. The paper becomes a dreamscape as one moves deeper into the piece. I never thought that paper could convey so much without a single line of graphite or dab of ink... Enjoy

Pickles and a Bauhaus Typeface

Welcome to my home away from home... Studio. Last week alone I logged over 50 hours of studio time. In the few hours that studio is unoccupied, our class pet Pickles (the cardboard moose) watches over the room. The drawing photographed is a poster created for my Altana and Grotto design from my last post.

Architecture... A Practice in Sleep Deprivation

I am an Architecture Major at the University of Oregon and I finished my design for an altana and grotto. Everyone has heard of an Grotto before (a cavelike structure for those who haven't) but few know the meaning of altana. Altanas are structures built on top of buildings in hot and humid climates, primarily seen in venice. They are built to escape from the heat that is trapped inside the building, creating a cool breezy oasis. Altanas are primarily seen in Italy and are rooted in the word alta, meaning high in Italian. The closest english word to altana is aerie, which is an eagles nest.
The purpose of this project was to build the two structures (altana and grotto) on a designated plot of land and have the two structures correlate with one another, a challenge, considering the polar qualities of the light and aerie altana compared with the heavy, dark, and earthen grotto.

Above are photos of my finished product.
Below are photos of the sketch models that helped develop my final design.

Myself With Myself and My Other Self

So I thought I would start with an introduction to myself. What better way to do it than show you myself. These are a few self portraits that I have created and they may give you a little insight on who I am.
